A legacy of love from Maggie Mae Buttercup

We wanted to share this sweet tribute to a beloved Henrico Humane rescue dog, Maggie. It is never easy to say goodbye to our animal companions, but boy are we thankful for the memories and the love they leave behind.

From a former adopter:

Maggie Mae Buttercup was a Neapolitan Mastiff that we rescued many years ago from HHS. Maggie was THE BEST dog ever and was loved by everyone in our neighborhood! I wasn't expecting to rescue a dog that day - I just went to buy some dog food. As I pulled in the parking lot, I saw her and she was shooting me LOVE DARTS!!! My husband was out of town, and I just casually mentioned that I wanted to foster her knowing full well we were going to rescue her! When Henrico Humane called to say our application was accepted, the boys and I were thrilled...and my husband was quite surprised. 😂

Maggie quickly became his favorite dog. Maggie slept with us in our king size bed, drank from the toilet and flung drool everywhere. It was perfect. She loved to roll in the grass and sleep on the sofa. She was the queen of the house. Eventually she developed thyroid cancer and the tumor became so large that she was struggling to breathe. It was time. She's in an urn that we keep with us to always remember her. My son gifted us with an original canvas portrait of her that he helped paint. It's the best gift ever. Her 11x17 big silly head makes me smile. We've since moved to SC and in Maggie's honor we've rescued another dog from the local animal control named Stella. Stella has helped fill a void in [our golden retriever] Murphy's life too since he became sad after Maggie passed. Maggie changed my life- I'll only rescue now. Thank you to Henrico Humane Society for the gift of Maggie.
