Mission

Henrico Humane Society is a volunteer-run, foster-based, non-profit organization with a mission to rescue dogs and cats from across Central Virginia and place them in loving homes.

Vision

We envision a future where all homeless dogs and cats in Henrico County find their forever home.

Impact

In 2024, Henrico Humane Society volunteers fostered and helped 224 cats and dogs find their forever homes. Because of our generous donors, we were able to provide medical assessments, and treatment when necessary, for 274 dogs and cats.

Our Story

Founded in 1991, Henrico Humane Society began with a small group of passionate animal lovers determined to make a difference. Frustrated by the number of adoptable pets being euthanized due to lack of space or resources, we committed to creating a lifeline for homeless animals in Central Virginia. What started in living rooms and garages has grown into a thriving network of foster homes, volunteers, and supporters — all united by one goal: to save lives and build a more compassionate community.

What We Do

Every year, we rescue hundreds of animals from overcrowded shelters, neglectful situations, or the streets. Our work includes:

  • Providing medical care, rehabilitation, and behavioral support

  • Placing pets in loving foster homes until adoption

  • Hosting regular adoption events and meet-and-greets

  • Educating the public on responsible pet ownership and the importance of spaying/neutering

We are a foster-based rescue — we don’t currently operate a physical shelter. Every animal we take in lives with a foster family until their forever home is found.

Whether you wish to adopt, foster, volunteer, or donate, there's a place for you in the Henrico Humane family. Your support helps save lives.

What Our Adopters Are Saying

“They were so much more responsive than several other rescue organizations I had applied to. I heard from HHS within a couple of days of submitting my application and had a phone conversation with them the next day.”
