Our Story
Founded in 1991, Henrico Humane Society began with a small group of passionate animal lovers determined to make a difference. Frustrated by the number of adoptable pets being euthanized due to lack of space or resources, we committed to creating a lifeline for homeless animals in Central Virginia. What started in living rooms and garages has grown into a thriving network of foster homes, volunteers, and supporters — all united by one goal: to save lives and build a more compassionate community.
What We Do
Every year, we rescue hundreds of animals from overcrowded shelters. Our work includes:
Providing medical care, rehabilitation, and behavioral support
Placing pets in loving foster homes until adoption
Hosting regular adoption events and meet-and-greets
Helping to build a community where every companion animal has a loving home through partnerships with local shelters.
We are a foster-based rescue and don’t have a physical shelter. Every animal we take in lives with a foster family until their forever home is found.
