Volunteer Needs

Work at Adoption Sites: A stand is set up every Saturday from 11 am - 4 pm, usually at either Fin & Feather Pet Store at 5208 Lakeside Avenue or or Ukrops West Park Shopping Center on West Broad Street. We need many volunteers to help in the following ways:

Transporter: Pick up crates & other materials kept inside HHS Suburban and drive vehicle to and from the adoption site in the morning and in the afternoon. Transporters are also needed to pick up animals from foster homes and return them at the end of the day if necessary.

Handler: Throughout the day, volunteers are needed to walk and water the dogs, clean crates, and hold the animals on lead. Handlers talk to people who may be interested in adopting the animal(s) they are taking care of for the day.

Other: There are many other ways you can help with adoptions, whether it be once a week or once a month, whatever works best for you!

Answer Telephone Lines: People can call our mail box (262-6634) if they are looking for an animal to adopt, have lost or found an animal, want to volunteer, or are interested in learning about upcoming events, etc. We need volunteers to respond to these messages, or to direct them to the appropriate person within the organization.

Work on Newsletter: Volunteers are needed to write articles and serve as editors for the quarterly newsletter. People are also needed to help fold, staple, sort and label newsletters prior to delivering them to the post office. Whenever we have special printing needs (an event announcement or HHS brochure, etc.), we rely on the people who design the newsletter for help.

Foster an Animal: HHS does not have a shelter, thus volunteers are relied on to foster the animals taken in. HHS covers all of the expenses (vet bills, food, supplies) - you provide the love. If you are unable to get your animal(s) to the adoption stand, we will arrange to have someone pick them up and drop them back off.

Work at Pet Expo: The annual Expo will be held during February and over 100 volunteers are needed to make the event a success. Volunteers sell tickets, help with demonstrations, and work with vendors.

Update Web Site: We need volunteers knowledgeable about maintaining web sites who can help keep the HHS site (www.henricohumane.org) up-to-date with pictures of animals, special event information, etc.

Work on Educational Programs: Volunteers are needed to help develop, market and present educational programs to the public (scout troops, schools, civic groups, etc.). Programs include "Responsible Pet Ownership", "The Importance of Spay/Neuter" and "Dog Bite Prevention".

Work at Special Events: HHS needs lots of people to help raise funds through special events year-round. Some of these events include Cactus House tour, gift wrapping at bookstores and educational booths.
