Hi, my name is Lucky, short for Lucky-Champ. I’m 2 years old now, and I am LUCKY to be alive! And not only that, I am happy and comfortable and content, all thanks to Henrico Humane Society!
Here is my story, as written by my foster Mom:
(November, 2000)
He is lucky to have survived a difficult and traumatic start in life, and he is such a champ in tolerating his medical treatment! "We can't help but wonder if this kitten was a victim of Halloween abuse. He was rescued from a dumpster a few days after that dangerous day for black cats. At only 4 weeks old, he was in sad shape... starved and emaciated, dehydrated, with matted fur, sores on his lips and mouth, and infested with fleas, ear mites and worms. It turns out that Lucky was probably kicked, which broke his right pelvic bone and hip joint. This traumatic fracture has healed in improper alignment, resulting in a very narrowed pelvic canal. And that causes Lucky to have difficulty passing his stool and urine. He takes kitty-laxative every day to keep his stools soft enough so that he can pass them. He also had a bladder infection at one point, and was not able to pass his urine. That has cleared up after treatment with antibiotics and steroids.
In spite of all this, Lucky is a very happy little guy at home! Unbelievably, he can run, climb the cat tree, and wrestle with the other cats! He does have trouble jumping up onto anything higher than about 12 inches, and crouching, like cats do when they eat and drink. (For Christmas, Santa brought him an elevated food dish so he can eat and drink more comfortably!) He is also very good about taking his medicine! Lucky is very loving to me and to all his foster-sibling cats! But because of the physical and psychological trauma he suffered when he was only 4 weeks old, he is very wary of anyone else.
(June, 2001 Update)
Lucky is now a 9-month old neutered male. Lucky was rescued from a dumpster at 4 weeks old. He had been a victim of "Halloween abuse" and suffered a fractured pelvis. When he was younger, it caused him to have trouble passing his bowel movements, and he had to take a laxative every day. Now that he has grown, he is doing well without laxatives, as long as he eats some canned pumpkin every day! The vet says he won't need surgery to repair his pelvis! He can run, climb the cat tree, and wrestle with his foster-cat siblings! Because of his kitten-hood trauma, he is not able to trust any human other than his foster Mom, so he will be staying there for good. He is especially bonded with a resident cat named Dixie… he sticks to her like glue, unless of course there is a person other than foster Mom in the house and then he is nowhere to be found! He must feel very safe when he is with Dixie, and she is so patient with him!
And so here I will stay with my foster Mom, and my best cat-friends, Dixie and Abigail! I can’t stop hiding whenever I hear someone else come in the house…. I am just too scared to meet them. But when its just family here, I can play and run through the whole house! And when I want too, I can find my favorite places for a relaxing nap. Dixie is always here to comfort me, and the food is not too bad! I do like that pumpkin, and it keeps me “moving right along”, so I feel good!
Thank you to Henrico Humane Society for understanding my need to live in my foster home, and THANK YOU to everyone who sends in donations to help pay my medical bills and other expenses. Not only have you saved my life, but you are giving me a happy, healthy life too!
