Large, Adoptable Dogs

All of the pets adopted through Henrico Humane Society are/will be spayed or neutered. If you adopt an animal not ready for the procedure, you will be given a $40 credit to have the procedure done. Please note, this credit can only be used at participating veterinary offices, please ask us for details. All of our pets are up to date on routine shots. Adopt a Dog!
Spot: Pyrenees/Lab/Dalmatian Mix   |   Large   |   2-3 yrs   |   Male
click for a larger image

Notes:  This guy is the gentlest dog you will ever meet.  Spot is a good to take on a walk, he is well mannered and stays right by your side.  Spot is fine with other dogs, however, if you were to take him to a dog park - he would prefer to sit right beside you on the bench verses playing with the other dogs - better yet - he would prefer just being with you on a couch watching tv.  He keeps a clean kennel which normally translate into cratetrained and often times represents being housebroken (he will just need a  little routine and guidance in his new home). Spot definitely loves human companionship and did I mention, he is an excellent passenger for car rides!  If interested in adopting, please submit an adoption application.

Spike: Black Lab mix   |   Medium   |   1-2 years   |   Male
click for a larger image

Notes:  Spike is an energetic boy who is waiting to learn some basic obedience.  He learned sit and down within 15 minutes and is just o so smart! He is housebroken and has lived in a home with no other pets.  An ideal home for him, would be someone who has time to teach him all that he needs to learn and that would be up for a good game of fetch in the evenings!  If interested, please submit application or contact us on how to arrange to meet this special boy! Please submit an adoption application.

Sadie: Lab Mix  |  Med/Large  |  7 years  |  Female
Click for a larger image

Notes:  Sadie's previous owners were unable to keep her and so she is anxious to become part of another family who can give her lots of affection.  This sweet, loving lab mix will make a wonderful addition to any home.  She is great around other dogs and has lived with cats.  The prospect of going out for a walk makes Sadie very excited so she is learning how to behave on the leash this is a new adventure for her.  She is very smart and while she probably needs further training, she is quite responsive to commands to sit, stay and lie down.  Sadie is crate-trained and house-broken, and ready to find a permanent home for her smiling face and wagging tail! Please submit an adoption application.

Junior: Lab/Sharpei Mix   |   Large   |   4 years   |   Male
click for a larger image

Notes:  Junior had been taking up residence at the cemetery for a few weeks.  The staff was feeding him until Animal Control picked him up and then Henrico Humane decided to help spring him out because he was such a sweetie pie!  He has been living with his foster family and their two dogs - and just loves it!  He is now HOUSEBROKEN and plays well with the other dogs in the house.  Junior is gentle and loving.  His favorite thing is sitting right beside you and give you his paw - really slow like and then he just sits there holding hands with you - and he falls asleep!  Junior is short for Earnhardt (his foster family loves Earnhardt!, don't be surprised if he shows up at stand with Nascar attire! ) Please submit an adoption application.

Puppies! Border Collie Mix  |  Medium  |  9 weeks  |  Female & Male
Click for a larger image

Notes:  There are 3 of these pups that came in from a rural shelter.  They are happy and friendly, but are border collie mixes, so are not appropriate for homes with small children.  Border collies are bred to herd and work on a farm, so will need regular exercise, and a fenced yard to play in to keep them happy and well-behaved. Please submit an adoption application.

Carter: Black Lab   |   Med. 55lbs   |   2 years   |   Female
click for a larger image

Notes:  Carter is playful and well behaved with a very shiny, smooth black coat. She loves people, dogs and animals.  She is housebroken, loves to hang out with her family.  Her brown eyes will melt your heart when she places her loving head on your lap. Please submit an adoption application.

Shelby: Yl. Lab/Chesapeake Bay Retr. Mix  |  Med. 55lbs  |  3 yrs  |  Female
Click for a larger image

Notes:  Shelby is a laid back, easy going girl who came to us from a rural shelter.  She is great with other dogs, and loves people.  She is housebroken already, and has definitely lives in a home before.  She's very eager to please and is learning the rules in her foster home quickly.  She's ready to be someone's perfect companion.  If you're interested in being that companion, please submit an adoption application.

Cheula: Lab/Pit Bull Mix   |   Med   |   1 year   |   Female
click for a larger image

Notes:  Cheula is an affectionate 1 year old pit bull terrier/lab mix.  Her name means "Beautiful" in Spanish, and she is truly a gorgeous girl.  Cheula lived in an apartment as a puppy, but would do well in a fenced-in backyard or with an owner who can take her on frequent long walks/runs.  Cheula still has a lot of puppy energy (many labs are high-spirited for 18-24 months), so she would be better with patient adult owners or a family that has older children.  Cheula loves to cuddle and she's the perfect dog to snuggle up with on a rainy day or take long runs at Belle Isle.  She is housebroken and crate-trained, spayed and updated on all her shots- ready for her forever home whenever it arrives!  Please submit an adoption application.

Bear: Lab/Hound Mix  |  Medium  |  1 yr.  |  Male
Click for a larger image

Notes:  Bear and his sister Bella both need new homes as their owner can no longer care for them.  They've been together since they were pups, and will be sad to split, but will do fine so long as their new home gives them lots of love and attention.  He is housebroken and well-mannered in the house.  He is great with adults, children and other dogs, but cats are an unknown.   Please submit an adoption application.

Bella: Flatcoat Retr./Chow Mix   |   Med   |   1 year   |   Female
click for a larger image

Notes:  Bella and her brother Bear both need new homes as their owner can no longer care for them due to health issues.  As you can see they love each other, so will need new homes where they can have a new doggie sibling or can have lots of love and attention lavished upon them.  Bella is a little shy until she gets to know you, but is all yours once she knows you're "safe".  As a result of this shyness, however, she should be in a more settled home, probably without small children.   She is housebroken, and loves other dogs.  Cats are an unknown. Please submit an adoption application.

Sweetie: Shep/Hound mix  |  Med(50lbs)  |  1 yr.  |  Female
Click for a larger image

Notes:  Sweetie is a loving girl who needs a new home where she can get all the love and affection she wants and deserves.  She is great with people, dogs, and cats, and likes nothing more than hanging out with her people and getting some pets.  She is quiet and gentle, and ready to find a home of her own.  If you're interested in spending some quality time with Sweetie, please submit an adoption application.

Dora : Collie/Lab mix   |   Med/Large   |   11 months   |   Female
click for a larger image

Notes:  Dora is perfectly housebroken and crate trained, although she really doesn't need to be crated.  She gets along well with her two foster siblings and has developed a healthy respect for the three cats who live there also.  She spends time outside and never challenges the fence.  Dora needs to go to a home with adults and/or older children as she really, really doesn't like being grabbed around the head and hugged as small children will do.  Her foster mom says she's the easiest foster she's ever had a sweet girl who fits right in and is no trouble. Please submit an adoption application.

Roscoe: Beagle mix   |   Medium   |   2 years   |   Male
click for a larger image

Notes:  Roscoe is a happy tail wagger of a guy.  He loves people and is great with other dogs.  He loves to be where his people are, and is working on housebreaking and basic commands.  He will need a 6' fence as he can climb to the top of a 4' fence.  He loves a good belly run or a scratch behind his ears. Please submit an adoption application.

Sarah: Yellow Lab mix  |  Med(45lbs)  |  18 months  |  Female
Click for a larger image

Notes:  Sarah is a cuddly kissy dog! A very friendly lab mix who is 18 months old and weighs 45 pounds. She loves other playful dogs, and is great with people too. She loves people and would let you rub her belly all day if she could! (Cats are an unknown.) She is playful but not hyper, she settles down well when inside and is curious but very obedient and responds well to voice commands. She would do best in a home with a tall fenced yard and another playful dog. She is housebroken and is quickly learning other commands such as sit and stay. She has good manners and sits by the door to come in or go out with out a lot of barking or jumping. Please submit an adoption application.

Gypsy: Collie/Husky mix   |   Med. (45lbs)   |   2 years   |   Female
click for a larger image

Notes:  Gypsy was rescued from a local pound on her last day.  She has the most beautiful long coat, and such a pretty smile.  She loves people, and is good with other dogs, but would probably be just as happy as an only dog.  She is well-mannered on a leash, very smart, and working on housebreaking.  She loves to be petted and fawned over.  She is not appropriate for an apartment. Please submit an adoption application.

Charlotte & Miranda: Shepherd mix   |   Med/Large   |   4 months   |   Female
click for a larger image

Notes:  These are 2 other country girls who have made their way to town.  They're happy and friendly, but will still stand back and take everything in before making a decision about whether they'll jump into the fracas.  They're working on housebreaking, and are great with other dogs. Please submit an adoption application.

Mystique & Q: Boxer   |   Medium   |   6 and 51/2   |   Male & Female
click for a larger image

Notes:  Mystic and Q are inseparable pals.  Mystic (all white) and Q (white with brown) are spoiled but yet loveable.  They both are house trained and know how to communicate well when they need something from you (e.g., bathroom-outside, eat-water, play).  Mystic is adorable with her light brown eyes.  She brings you toys to play with her, wiggles her rear like a go-go dancer, acts like a big sister to Q (licks Q a lot), and tolerates Q sleeping on her.  Q is irresistible with those big brown eyes.  He likes to play with a toy alone most of the time; however, his favorite activity is being rubbed.  Q will approach you with his cute face and either lean on you or put his paw up for you to give him a good rub down.  These two are well-socialized dogs.  They are great with kids, well trained, know basic obedience, and great on a leash.

These dogs' dad is in the military and mom is trying to raise the children and the dogs on her own.  See can't give the dogs the attention they need and deserve.  Since these 2 have been together since they were babies, and will be going through great upheaval by going to a new home, WE ARE LOOKING FOR A HOME FOR THEM TO GO TO TOGETHER. Please submit an adoption application.

Sonny: Lab mix   |   Med/Large   |   14 weeks   |   Male
click for a larger image

Notes:  Sonny is a shy little country guy who is learning new things and getting adjusted more and more to being a housedog every day.  He is going to come around nicely, but is still too shy to be appropriate for a home with small children.  If you'd like to help this little man on the road to city life, please submit an adoption application.

Gordon: Lab mix   |   Large   |   4-5 months   |   Male
click for a larger image

Notes:  Gordon is a supersweet 4-5 month old boy that wants to please his family.  He is very active, loves to play with everyone in his foster home. He gets along well with the other dogs at his foster home, drives some ot the dogs a little crazy with all the play. He is a  fuzzy little bear of a boy.  He needs an active home with a fenced yard to keep him busy during his puppyhood or another active young playmate.  He is learning his house manners, does well on the leash. He really needs someone's time to work with him, help him learn the in's and out;'s of being a dog. If you think yours is the righ family for this young dog, please submit an adoption application.

Mr. Tibbs: Corgie/Lab mix   |   Med (45lbs)   |   5 years   |   Male
click for a larger image

Notes:  Mr. Tibbs (Tibbie) is such a sweet, lovable dog but as you can see, he doesn¹t like to smile for the camera! He¹s practically housebroken only an occasional accident or two. He¹s very playful, but also loves to have his belly rubbed and cuddles right up next to you on the couch or bed! He is very quiet matter of fact, we¹ve never actually heard him bark! He¹s very gentle and gets along great with other dogs. Tibbie is ready for his forever home give this little guy a chance to show you how wonderful he is! Please submit an adoption application.

Mia: Lab/Weimeraner   |   Med(60lbs)   |   18 months   |   Female
click for a larger image

Notes:  My name is Mia and I am a 1 1/2 year old Weimaraner mix. I am a very easygoing, happy, and affectionate kind of girl. My owners didn't want me anymore after I had puppies and they took all of us to the shelter. But, shortly after I arrived, six other pups were brought there and were not old enough to take care of themselves. So, being the great dog and mother that I am, I took them in and loved and nurtured them as if they were my own.  I am housebroken, and great with both dogs and cats.  I can go over a 4 foot fence (or at least I did when another dog led me), but I know my name and came when called.  Please submit an adoption application.

Ross: Rotweiller mix   |   Large   |   5 months   |   Male
click for a larger image

Notes:  Ross is a sweet pup who loves to play "act like shrubbery".  He will hide in the grass or under a bush and spring out at the first dog to go by!  He gets a real thrill out of the "I scared you" part and plays hard with his victim!  He's shown only curiosity towards cats, does well in a crate and on a leash but loves to run fast and free in a big yard!  Please submit an adoption application.

Rosie: Rotweiller mix   |   Large   |   5 months   |   Female
click for a larger image

Notes:  Rosie looks like a fox!  She is a lovey girl with a lot of energy who loves to chase the other dogs.  She likes to steal things quick like a shoe or the cats blanket and run across the room with it just to get your attention!  She does well in a crate and on a leash but is used to running fast and free in a big yard! Please submit an adoption application.

Riley: Collie/Lab mix   |   60lbs   |   1 year   |   Male
click for a larger image

Notes:  This is Rile E. Coyote (or just plain Riley if you please), possibly the best dog ever.  He's what is known in rescue circles as a "good save."  Sometimes a dog comes along who is just SO awesome that nobody can figure out how he ended up homeless in the first place.  If you can believe it, Riley's owners moved out and just left him behind--inside the house!  Riley is an 18 month old Collie and Retriever mix.  He is housebroken, crate trained, and has been well socialized with other dogs and cats.  He is a gentle soul who would make a loving and loyal companion for even the smallest child.  Thanks to HHS, he has a shot at the kind of life a perfect dog like him deserves--with YOU! Please submit an adoption application.

Spencer   : Pointer/Spaniel Mix  |  Med (45lbs)  |  6 years  |  Male
Click for a larger image

Notes:  Spencer is a turnkey dog.  He is housebroken and well mannered in the house, doesn't need to be crated, and walks perfectly on a leash.  He knows his basic commands, and loves to sit on the couch and stare adoringly at his foster parents.  When he wags his tail, his whole body moves, earning him the nickname of Wiggles.  He loves other dogs, and is very smart. He'll do best in a home where he'll be an included member of the family, as that is his greatest goal in life.  He needs someone to take regular walks with him, so that he is centered and confident that his owners are in charge.  He should go to a home with no children, as he can be protective of them, even with their friends. Please submit an adoption application.

Rhett   : Australian Shepherd  |  Med(45lbs)  |  18 months  |  Male
Click for a larger image

Notes:  Hi ya'll, I'm Rhett. If you have forgotten how a southern gentleman is supposed to act, I can certainly remind you. I used to be a farm dog, but was relieved of my duties when my owner cut my food rations and sent me to a kill pound. HHS rescued me because they recognized my devilishly good looks too. How many fellas do you know that have life-saving good looks? But I don't let it go to my head. This is my first time living in a house in the city,  I am getting used to city life, it's good. I love my crate and I enjoy learning new things. I aim to please. I enjoy going on walks and laying at my foster mom's feet while she reads. The best is when she pauses to scratch behind my ears. I love to cuddle. I am gaining weight and getting stronger every day. Please submit an adoption application.

CharlieGirl: Lab/Hound Mix  |  Med 45lbs  |  1 year  |  Female
Click for a larger image

Notes:  CharlieGirl is super sweet.  She loves her walks and to have her belly rubbed. She is housebroken.  She does not like the crate so she has run of the house and is very good.  She loves to bury her bones (under her dogbed)and keep the squirrels out of the back yard.  She does not bark a lot, occasionally she will answer back a neighborhood dog. She needs a home with a solid fenced in yard -she loves to be outside on a nice day. She does well on the leash walking or running. She sleeps all day and is ready to be playful when you come home.  Her foster parent is working on her jumping but she already knows her commands .  She is a submissive dog.  She gets along well with other dogs.  She would be a good dog for a single, couple or family with kids - all she wants is to be loved all the time.  If you're interested in CharlieGirl, please submit an adoption application.

Turner   : Hound Mix  |  Medium  |  9 months  |  Male
Click for a larger image

Notes:  Turner really is a handsome guy, definitely our best "poser" when the camera comes out. He loves to get out and play with other dogs but isn't a rowdy hard player. He thinks people of all ages and sizes are great to have around, even a cat would be welcomed into his pack. Turner likes to go for a ride in the car, loves just hanging out with his people for some petting, TV time on the couch if invited or a nice long walk. He does have separation issues but is working very hard to overcome and is making good progress. Another dog in the house about his size is requested to help him with the separation issues. Please submit an adoption application.

Doralee: Bluetick Hound   |   Med (40lbs)   |   1 year   |   Female
click for a larger image

Notes:  Doralee is a very loving and sweet bluetick hound who has made her way to the big city. By following her foster sisters around she is learning what a loving home is like and is anxious to please. She's a little timid but is warming up and likes to give kisses. She is crate trained and is currently living with a cat but would probably do better in a home without cats. Because she is a hound she might chase more active cats. She loves to sleep on her dog bed at night and is doing really well with her house breaking. One of her favorite activities is to gather all the dog toys in one room. Won't you consider giving this pretty gal a new home? Please submit an adoption application.

Zeke : ShepherdBoxer Mix   |   Med (50lbs)   |   2 years   |   Male
click for a larger image

Notes:  Zeke is a kind, tender soul who wants nothing more than to please his family.  He is housebroken and crate trained, and is trained with a doggydoor.  He loves to follow you wherever you go, and loves his new stuffed animal toys.  He carries them around proudly, and squeaks them periodically just to make sure you remember he has a "baby".  He knows how to sit, and is great on a leash.  He gives great kisses, and is friendly and outgoing with anyone who will show him a little love.  He is great with other dogs, but would be fine as an only pet too.  If you're looking for unconditional love, Zeke is your man.  Please submit an adoption application.

Alexander : Bluetick Hound   |   Med (40lbs)   |   1 year   |   Male
click for a larger image

Notes:  Alex is one of the most eye catching dogs we've seen.  In addition to that beautiful blueticking on his coat, he has a blue eye.  He's sweet and playful, and loves people and other dogs.  He's still working on his housemanners, but is so eager to please that he's catching on quickly to what makes the people tell him he's a good boy.  If you're interested in Alex, please submit an adoption application.

Easter : Pit Bull   |   Medium   |   5 Years   |   Female
click for a larger image

Notes:  Easter is a sweet, energeitc and enthusiastic lady.  She is a little shy with strangers but once she gets to know you she is all kisses and wags.  She enjoys carrying her bowl everywhere.  It is so fun to watch her chase it around like a hockey puck.   Guaranteed to make you laugh out loud!  She is such a silly girl   Easter is getting along great with the people and dogs in her foster home but can at times get a little too playful with the cats.  She is house broken and crate trained.  If interested, please submit an adoption application.

Houston: Lab/Hound mix   |   Medium 45lbs   |   18 months   |   Male
click for a larger image

Notes:  Houston is new to the city.  He's been living at a rural shelter since April, who thought he was just the nicest guy, so they'd hide him on euthanasia day so that they could have more time to find him a safe place to go.  Once you meet him, you'll understand why they went to the effort.  He sweet and loving, affectionate and happy, and you can sense the gratitude he has for his rescuers.  Even though he is part hound, the shelter workers never heard him bark once in the 8 months he was there.  He seems to be housebroken, and is good with most other dogs, but he'd also be fine as an only pet.  He'll be cat tested in the next day or so.  If you're looking for a companion for life, Houston is your guy. Please submit an adoption application.

Lorna : Shiba Inu mix   |   Medium 30lbs   |   3 years   |   Female
click for a larger image

Notes:  Lorna did not want to cooperate with the camera, but she has big bat ears that stand straight up in the air.  Lorna LOVES people, but especially loves kids.  One of the kids in her foster home takes a nap with Lorna curled up as his pillow.  She likes other dogs too, so long as they are boys or smaller than her.  She's very fearful of larger female dogs, so needs a home with no girl dogs bigger than her.  She's being cat tested in the next couple of days.  She is housebroken and crate trained too, and is just a friendly, happy little girl.  If you're looking for a small dog with personality and crazy ears, Lorna is your girl.  Please submit an adoption application.
